Introduction
Across all of my growing-up years, I looked forward to getting married and having a family. I envisioned having all of the wonderful experiences that were not part of my childhood years. I longed for the simple things like sitting with family and watching a television show. Now, after 77 years of living, I lament that my greatest childhood dream never happened.
However, some four or five years ago, I met Ron and Lib Loftis. As I write this introduction, Ron is 92 and Lib is 91. They have been married for over 70 years. My first recognition of them was when they came up together in a church conference to report on the prayer effort that they were leading. I was interested in what they had to say about the Monday prayer time, but was more struck by the love and oneness that was so obvious between them.
Given the difficulties of my marital journey, I was amazed by what I saw in them, just in those few minutes. I joined their prayer group and, over the next several years, got to watch them together and interact with them. Finally, it hit me that they had built a tremendously successful marriage. Given that observation and absolute conclusion, I asked if they would allow me to tell their story in a book. Thankfully, they agreed.
Over almost a year, we met and talked about their journey from being in high school together to a love-filled marriage that is clearly “A Marriage for the Ages”. That time with them was eye-opening, also revealing as to how I would have been helped tremendously if I could have had time with them early in my married life. However, even after my lifetime of being married, I was helped by time with Ron and Lib.
Consequently, I am sharing their story in the hope that others will be helped by it as they navigate preparing for marriage or being in a marriage.
